Space Vector Modulation (SVM) is an advanced control algorithm that improves how a servo drive delivers power to a brushless motor. Like all brushless motor control methods, its goal is to energize the motor windings in the correct sequence to create a rotating magnetic field that continuously pulls the rotor forward. 

Traditional approaches such as trapezoidal commutation and sinusoidal PWM achieve this by commanding the drive to energize the motor phases in a predetermined pattern. The drive itself has eight possible switching states (six active voltage vectors and two zero vectors) that define the voltages it can apply to the motor. 

The challenge is that the desired voltage vector rarely aligns perfectly with one of these discrete states. Instead of simply stepping from one state to the next, Space Vector Modulation rapidly switches between the nearest available voltage vectors, precisely controlling how long each is applied. The motor responds to the average of these voltages, effectively creating a voltage vector that can point in almost any direction.

This finer control keeps the magnetic field closer to the ideal torque-producing angle throughout each switching cycle, reducing harmonic distortion and torque ripple while making better use of the available DC bus voltage. The result is smoother operation, higher efficiency, and improved dynamic performance—key advantages in advanced motion control applications.

Analogy: Think of Space Vector Modulation (SVM) like an "Etch A Sketch" for electric motors. [1] 

Instead of attempting to draw a perfect circle on a screen using only vertical and horizontal knob movements, you smoothly blend the two to create any curve. In a motor, SVM mathematically blends fixed, discrete electrical states to create a smooth, rotating magnetic field that turns the motor effortlessly.
